The Hells
Once in awhile there's a buzz about a band before they've even played a gig. Occasionally the excitement is justified, as is the case with The Hells. And when those gigs did happen, with The Soledad Brothers, The Rapture and The Burning Brides, the buzz became justified by the power of their performance, the quality of their songwriting and the tangible electricity of their on-stage magnetism.
The Hells are Ippy and Kevin who met through a mutual friend - Ippy is originally from Spain and Kevin, from Philadelphia, USA. Upon meeting and comparing record collections (Ike and Tina next to the Cramps... Black Sabbath... Radio Birdman... Miles Davis... Johnny Thunders...), BANG! A spark of recognition, the mystique, the trash and class... it was then they knew they had to start their own favourite band: punk, loud, sexy rock n roll. The Hells were born.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, drummer friend, Jeff Watson of the Icarus Line, was seduced by the idea of trading a nice apartment in sunny LA for sleeping on floors in the middle of a London Winter, to help these two play a string of gigs and blag some recording time. They had time to record six tracks before Jeff came to his senses, and realised that life wasn't just for having fun, it was time to return to LA, rejoin The Icarus Line and do some work. He has been replaced most effectively by former Warm Jets and Tiger drummer Ed Wood and the live sound has been further augmented with the rocking bass of The Beating's Dino Golnick.
The Gin Palace
The Gin Palace is an electrifying band from London.* It's a six month old 3 piece with a lady singer, no bass guitar and no hi-hats.* Formed from the ashes of London rockers, Penthouse and featuring the Robert Quine-cum-Spencer guitar blitz of Jon Free, The Gin Palace trio strip it down to rock'n'roll essentials… guitar, drums and vocals. Meaghan is a furious, elegant Deitrich, a panther in a cocktail dress.* Jon's guitar is a farm threshing machine that has literally become unhinged
and is spinning out of control - faster faster faster - while Stuart is the steaming, pounding generator which drives the truck. The Gin Palace are the most fearsome and exciting bastardisation of what crawled up from the blues swamp that the UK has produced since The Yardbirds. "Kill-Grief" is their debut release.
Jeffrey Lewis
Jeffrey Lewis is a New York City artist who translates his life into warming, absorbing comic book stories. His amazing live shows consist of garagey, psychedelic lullabies with an expanding collection of "lo-budget videos" (really just large ragged comic books drawn by Jeffrey, which are held up and shown to the audience). Along with The Moldy Peaches, Lewis plays the "Anti-Folk" circuit in NYC (he also drew some of the Peaches album sleeve artwork) . Following his debut single "The Chelsea Hotel Oral Sex Song" and his full-length album "The Last Time I Did Acid I Went Insane", Lewis has released his 2nd album entitled "It's The Ones Who've Cracked That The Light Shines Through" on Rough Trade Records (home to The Strokes/Moldy Peaches/The Libertines/Low).
Diane Cluck
Diane Cluck is a 25 year-old New York songwriter. She has done tours with Daniel Johnston in the US and had a residency at New York City's prestigeous avant-downtown club Tonic. She has a quite unique, unorthodox singing/playing style, and a totally mesmerising stage presence. She sometimes builds her own instruments or plays unusual instruments, but even if just touring with an acoustic guitar she invents odd chords and note patterns for an exquisite musical experience that is often as unsettling as it is beautiful. She has done a few songs on the "Collaborations" album with Jeffrey Lewis and Kimya Dawson (Moldy Peaches) and she has a track featured on Rough Trade's "Antifolk Volume 1 CD".
