okay so up to ive been a 100% windows user. but im a bit bored of windows and sick of frequent crashes/viruses/spyware.

..so im thinking of getting an apple laptop (probably a 12" powerbook). i only ever use my computer for three things, (i) word, (ii) photoshop, (iii) video editing. im not looking for a desktop replacement at all, so compatibility with windows must be good. i just have a couple of questions:

(i) will the air port card work okay with my wireless network at home (i.e. exchange files with windows machines)?
(ii) is software (i.e. music sequencing/video editing) as widely available on p2p networks as windows stuff?
(iii) how easy is it to get office for the mac on the cheap?

so should i make the jump?

thanks a lot,
aron

Do it...
You will always have the Desktop if you reeeeeely need it...
But once you go mac you'll never go back...
Final Cut Pro stands sholder to sholder with Avid, and in some respects... it's better...
The operating system is far more stable and a lot more user friendly...
I needed to get Office for my Mac there recently... Do you really think I payed for a Microsoft product?

I use both Windows and Mac on a day to day basis and the Mac is always a less stressful enviroment...

I know some design forums that have banned mac/pc threads because they always go on for ever. with no resolution.

so, 90% of the world use windows/pcs but it's an ugly as fuck o/s prone to all kind of interweb disease blah blah blah.

I have a PC too but I use a g4 powerbook (admittedly it's a few years old) at work and I'd say:

get a mac. no one makes viruses for the mac, osx is solid and pretty. and there are no problems getting most major software off the interweb. there's less small shareware stuff out there but there are plently of good mac bits and bobs out there. what music software do you plan to use? wink wink ;)

to quote ian, you'll never go back.

ive taken all advice on board and a powerbook has been ordered :)

if anyone has reason / ableton live for the mac and is feeling generous please let me know. or even cubase, i just want some sort of decent sequencer.

i can make payment in the form of a 4.5Gb DVD of mp3s / anything else i have in my possesion.

thanks,
aron

you've taken the plunge into mac land then. good choice. reason 2 is a bastard because you need two soundbank cds to validate the program. I had to buy a "backup" copy off the net for the pc. $40. haven't gotten it sorted for mac. yet. think I have a copy of live. no keygen. must have a look for that. both deadly programs. love 'em! :)

I have cubase but for some reason it won't let you load any VSTis... which is odd.

yea i thought I was getting Xpress6.5 with Aquistion, turned out to be Acrobat after ages of downloading. shite.
is that file still floating around? I despise quark xpress (go indesign!) but I needed to use it for one job earlier last year. downloaded that fuckhead file THREE TIMES! aargh!!!

two months later and ...

zero problems, and all my windows photoshop/office files work purrrrfect. i still have to try some video editing.
