I inherited a tape of the first R.E.M. album off a friend. Radio Free Europe is a good song but the others are like if you heard 5 or 10 seconds of each tune they would sound good but they're unremarkable songs.
Not a patch on Dream Syndicate, Pylon, The Embarrassment, Feelies, 100 Flowers or for that matter Wipers, Saccharine Trust, Meat Puppets etc.

R.E.M. sound like a post punk version of Tom Petty to me.

Some good songs but overall samey and nothing to jump up and down about.
