Friend of mine will be in hospital for a while after a pretty serious op. Heading in to visit her tomorrow, but I'm sort of at a loss as to what to bring her.

Was going to bring my Nintendo DS and a few games for her to borrow and a couple of books, but after that I'm stuck.

Any ideas of any novel/interesting things to help keep her in good spirits/occupied while she's there?

Last time I was in hospital I most appreciated 10 Benson(non judgemental type)

The internet. ;)

Yeah, making sure they have enough toiletries is a good thing. Ear plugs & eye mask... I find it very hard to sleep with that much noise and light. Also fruit. Sounds odd but seriously the food is pretty bad and always lacks fruit.

I once had a guy bring me a burrito and porn while I was in hospital. He said it's what a guy would want. It made me laugh and brightened my mood.

She'd probably appreciate that more than most things actually.

what might be nice is a book on a CD. Joyce is good to listen to for instance.

I'm only thinking about myself here really, but I couldn;t really roll over and prop myself up to read due to the blood that would be dribbling out of me all the time. I couldn't hold the book up because its tiring, and I couldn't read anyway because I was blasted on meds.

Shit ipod ear buds and a Ulysses on a CD hit the mark though.

if anyone has a mini DVD player you could borrow that'd go down a threat, I've 3 hospital visits to make today too, the joys of family :)

Dr. Hilary Jones from GMTV would be an ideal hospital visit. He brings a mix of celebrity and actual medical knowledge.

I'd love him to be my doctor (and maybe more...)

This is true. While books are nice and all it's really hard to read them when you feel awful. Plus the noise and commotion going on. I even had a hard time listening to music because I was afraid I would attach memories of that dreadful ward room with the music thus making it un-listenable after the fact. Maybe a book of short stories on CD would be good. Tiny bits of entertainment without a long commitment.
