I always think of siamese dream and gish as MBV sounding, with melloncollie more alt.rock and slightly gothic, and everything else after very gothic. This (as i remember, been a few days) was rock with a bit of goth. And i think the guitars reminded me of a specific song off melloncollie, can't think of it off the top of my head.

I think the one thing we can all agree on is that's it's way too fucken long.

I dunno about that. Mellon Collie is pretty great, if too much and too long. There was more than enough for a super single cd album. Adore is great, too. Has some lovely songs on it. Their last one sucked, though - bar 1 or 2 songs.
