Really? Haven't seen it but good source material, Ang Lee's usually pretty good...

Well, I'm writing off on the basis of the trailer alone but i still stand by my assessment of it.

I would say so, yes. Take away the spectacle and theres not much left

My feelings on the film are as follows:

IF GANDALF CAN SUMMON GIANT FUCKING BIRDS JUST FLY STRAIGHT TO THE FUCKING MOUNTAIN.

Maybe so but then the group would never have been captured by the Goblins on the mountain and Bilbo would not meet Smegal/Gollum in the Mines of Moria, and so then he would not encounter the ring. Besides i am not sure if Gandalf can command the eagles maybe they have some mutual respect for each other due to various encounters over the years but it would be a heck a favor to call in i think. Or perhaps he just didn't think of it at the time!
And also you know the Dwarves they have there own personal incentive's in the adventure which is a shit load of treasure in Iron Mountain and the kingdom or halls that comes with it but that is not the real business of the grey wizard !

Then again maybe it was just an easy way for the author to fix the plot as he said himself he was often surprised or completely puzzled by some of the things that cropped up in the stories and had to try to fit it together or make it work or see what happens!
