Thursday 2nd December:
"The Gnus"
Jonathon O’Donovan (guitar), Justin Carroll (keyboards), Bill Blackmore (trumpet), Cormac Larkin (drums)
The German ECM label is usually regarded as the home of European avant-gardists and Scandinavian wailers like Jan Garbarek and Eberhard Weber. In fact, Editions in Contemporary Music GmbH has also been a safe haven for some of North America’s leading post-bop musicians who find their own continent too conservative for their musical voyages of discovery. John Abercrombie, Kenny Wheeler (a London based Canadian), Bill Frisell, Jack de Johnette, Paul Motian and Dave Holland (a US-based European) have all enjoyed long and fruitful relationships with Manfred Eicher’s Munich based label.
Their music has inspired some of Dublin’s finest and most adventurous musicians to form The Gnus. Veering from the loud and visceral to the soft and tender, the Gnus take their cue from classic recordings like Kenny Wheeler’s Deer Wan and Gnu High, John Abercrombie’s Current Events and Speak of the Devil, and Jack de Johnette’s New Directions. As well as tunes from these albums, the Gnus’ set features original compositions from Carroll and O’Donovan, two of the most highly regarded young musicians in Irish jazz. Have you heard the Gnus?
@ The Boom Boom Room. Thursday 2nd. 8:30pm. €8.
BBR is above Patrick Conway's on Parnell Street.
