This week, a bit of hybrid folk and electronic from Ireland's THE HOLLOWS and visiting Australian ALPS...

THE HOLLOWS are Greg O'Brien and Gary Morrison. They make folk-based music that's delicate, but not so gossamer that it wafts away at the merest touch. A combination of singer/songwriter lyricism, indie attitude and electronic adventurousness has earned them comparisons to Sparklehorse and the Postal Service (both admitted influences). They make their Lazybird debut during the current Irish tour, which included a gig last week with Six Organs of Admittance, about which John Kealy writes:

"The two-piece played slow, introspective indie rock not far from the realms explored by Low. Both played guitar and sang with simple but pretty programmed beats as backing. They were highly enjoyable and I would have gladly listened to them for longer."

Their latest album, It Was on Fire When I Lay down on It, is now available on the always-excellent Slow Loris label.

ALPS is Chris Hearn from Newcastle, New South Wales, although he's currently based in the UK. Although Alps sometimes includes a friend or two, it's just Chris by himself on the current Irish tour, playing a mixture of indie-pop and electronic noise that makes him and The Hollows kindred spirits.

Jasmine Loucks writes this about one of Alps' US gigs in October: "The group reminds me of The Feelings, one of the bands that originally got me interested in soft indie rock. There’s a simplistic but beautiful melody to their songs, while Chris Hearn, the band’s lead, speaks the lyrics in a soothing baritone voice. Their songs are almost hypnotic, consuming the entirety of your attention span."

His debut full-length Alps of New South Wales is available from Sound & Fury (http://www.soundandfury.com.au).

If this sounds to you like a good way to avoid the stress and strain of all the shopping, partying and general frustration that comes with the holiday season, then come on up. Doors at around 9ish, only five euro in.
