LAZYBIRD
This Sunday, 8pm 'til closing
Anseo (upstairs), 18 Lower Camden St., Dublin 2

This Sunday, Lazybird welcomes back one of our own favourite Irish electronic acts, SOLEN.

Donal and John are two Dublin-based electronic musicians that have been producing music under the Solen moniker for a couple of years now. Although many of their appearances have unsurprisingly been alongside their Alphabet Set labelmates, they've also gigged with fellow electronic travellers Plaid, Chris Clark, Digital Mystikz and Ambulance, as well as with Scary Eire and The Wolfe Tones.

For their live shows, they use a setup of their own construction which allows for a mixture of preprogrammed sounds and extensive improvisations. Song structures, tempos and rhythms are changed, altered and mutated on the fly, allowing for reactive performances based on context: chaotic parties inform chaotic renditions of songs, quieter affairs see a quieter musical return.

Solen's debut release, Contextual Healing, has just been released on ABCNet, and is available for free download via the Alphabet Set website at http://alphabetset.net/abcnet/abcnet008.html (and they've promised to bring a few CD-R copies along on Sunday as well). Label head John "Thalamus" Mahon writes thusly about it:

"Solen are the duo of Donal Keating and John Flynn, who create otherworldly electronic sounds of macro intensity and power. Tonal rhythms and percussive melodies collide with pulsed syncopation, driving their creations forward into open soundfields which envelop them and shudder inside out through splayed shards of echo... we are very happy to present this online EP as their first release after many excellent live shows with us, keep an eye out for an album in the near future :)"

Well, yeah, he would say that, wouldn't he? But we agree with him; Solen are a class band well worth seeing.

This'll be the band's last gig for quite a while, as John's off to London for several months, so come on up to Anseo this Sunday to check them out while they last. Doors at 8pm, and only five euro in.

Bleep on,

Bump.

Solen will be bringing along a mate of theirs to play as well. We don't have too many details, but Donal says, "A friend of mine has also done a few remixes of our tracks and would be able to do them, and his own stuff, live with some hardware and possibly a laptop."
