Just found out i'm not eligable for a grant because the parents earn too much.
Anyway off to college this year maximum can afford with work is 130 after rent,
Wondering how much other students are able to manage on and what people
think of the grant system? Do you think 130 is ok for food socialising, academic supplies.
Any budgeting tips would be great too, thanks guys.

thought of commuting but the distance is too far had to change colleges last minute
do ye think it's manageable?

EUR130 a week after rent? It's a very long time since I was a student, but that sounds like plenty to me. Best budgeting method I ever had was put the money you have for the week in your pocket on Monday, so you can always see how much you have left

Humm, I'd say 130 EUR is LOADS, I'd be lucky to have that right now. Depends on how much you are willing to spend on books I suppose

not to contradict you egg but if i put 130 quid in my pocket on monday i'd wake up in the horror of horrors on tuesday evening in a litter of wine bottles and half-eaten unnecessary luxury foodstuffs

The thread is called student budgeting not student wastrel spendthriftery!

well that's why i don't ever put 130 quid in my pocket. i stay in the office til it's too late to buy booze and go home for lentils and rice...again

oh yeah, speaking of which...eat lots of red lentils and rice
cheap, easy and quick to cook, and very nutritious.

buy them in 5 kg bags.

pete should show soon and talk about when the dole was 45 quid.

i'd say you could bribe someone to do your homework and still live comfortably for 130 a week.

thanks a lot lads, great replies, all the bills are paid for in the deposit so thank
god no bills to worry about, just wondering does anyone have any idea what books
cost at the beginning of the year i'm going to an .i.t. for a business/finance course
I'm 21 but never had to manage money before haven't a clue about the book costs.

my job doesn't start til sept so havent much for then after the deposit
so books is a bit of a worry.

have you tried ebay, amazon etc.?

or library?
or you could put up a notice on the department notice board looking for second hand, although i suppose it's too late for that now - exams are over aren't they...you could try emailing the department secretary and ask if they could send a message to outgoing students for you.
although students selling books are usually looking for a highish price because they paid a lot for them and know how much you'd have to pay new...still, cheaper than buying new anyway

edit: if emailing the department secretary, be very, very polite. you don't want to piss that person off. and they're easily riled because they have to deal with everyone's idiocy all day long.
