As a rule I hate songs about songs, films about films, books about books etc. But there are so many exceptions to that rule that it's not a rule at all. I've even been guilty of it.

I feel exactly the same. It's such a self-indulgent thing to do and it shouldn't work. But then there's all that great Buckowski literature, Adaptation, Curb Your Enthusiasm etc. I guess people are best writing about what they know so their craft, so to speak, will often sneak into the material.

Argo, The Player etc are so fucking annoying yet enjoyable at the same time. Good shit example = Hail Ceaser.
