Anybody use this? What mic do you use? Pluggin an sm57 into my soundcard sounds almost unintelligible - is there a better way?

I use the built-in mics on my thinkpad and powerbook, respectively. Never had a problem. Have you mucked around with the gain in control panel?

try turning up the mic record level in the volume control
go into master volume then options and properties and select record
or see if the sound card has a setting to boost microphones

On the off-chance that you have some kind of 'real' mic preamp, use that. Otherwise, those headsets are cheap as chips, or close enough.

No real preamp (bar the one on my mbox, can't use that though) - there does seem to be a preamp of sorts on the soundcard (external creative audigy thing) but it still sounds shit. To be heard at all I've to put my mouth right on top of the mic, and then I seem to be causing some clipping somewhere

Guess I'll have to get one of them headsets

i got a headset with microphone and a webcam there yesterday in a combo pack made by canyon.never heard of them either

anyway 39 euro in back from the future on aungier street. seems slick enough,no delay on audio and good quality to Finland. thats probably more to do with the computers though (dont think country distance makes a difference does it?)
