I got an email saying a photo I put up on Flickr of Patrick Wolf in the Olympia Theatre has been "shortlisted" for use in a guide by a group called Schmap in their online Dublin Guide, is this legit? Or is it a mass email a load of people got?

Hi organisedchaoslimerick,

I am writing to let you know that one of your photos has
been short-listed for inclusion in the fourth edition of
our Schmap Dublin Guide, to be published later this month.

Clicking this link will take you to a page where you can:
i) See which of your photos has been short-listed.
ii) Submit or withdraw your photo from our final selection
phase.
iii) Learn how we credit photos in our Schmap Guides.
iv) Browse online or download the second edition of our
Schmap Dublin Guide.

While we offer no payment for publication, many
photographers are pleased to submit their photos, as Schmap
Guides give their work recognition and wide exposure, and
are free of charge to readers. Photos are published at a
maximum width of 150 pixels, are clearly attributed, and
link to high-resolution originals at Flickr.

Our submission deadline is Monday, October 22. If you
happen to be reading this message after this date, please
still click on the link above (our Schmap Guides are
updated frequently - photos submitted after this deadline
will be considered for later releases).

Best regards,

Emma Williams,
Managing Editor, Schmap Guides

I know, the site isn't up to much. Their current guide has only 20 spots but I don't really mind like, I agreed to it. I'm hardly a professional who wants to be paid.

That's the image in question. It's not my favourite one from that night but I suppose its alright.

on general principle, i'd refuse to allow them to use any photos.
they're using an opt-out system; i'd be very surprised if that stood up under any legal scrutiny.

sorry, i read your mail that they mailed you and said they were using your photo, unless you told them otherwise. i somehow missed the bit about you submitting it.

i got one too. don't think there's much more to it - i have one in the budapest guide that they asked me about last year.

was it through flickr? maybe it's because i'm not taking photos for anything other than my own entertainment but i find it kind of exciting that anyone's interested. i got a photo published in a spanish architecture magazine in exchange for a copy, and the issue came in the post last week - dead fancy, expensive magazine.

yeah they took some crappy cameraphone pic of mine

for the phoenix park ref, I think they just pic the first one that comes up in a search or something random and lazy like that. sure there must be hundreds of more exciting/better quality ones.

I have absolutely no problem with them doing this. All it is, is a link back to your flickr public images. If they're public, don't you want people to look at them? They do attribute the pics, so that's grand.

I've had a good few of mine published for free of late. I've no problem as I hadn't actually gone to the bother of submitting them anywhere. If someone likes them, good luck to them. So long as they ask first, and respect that if I say no, I mean no. 'Cos, well, no means no, like.
