Are there any programs available that allow you to copy streamed video to your hard drive?

My girlfriend's father appeared in some old footage which can be accessed on the RTE website, and I'd like to save it as an avi, or any other video format.

try these:

if it's youtube, a google search for "save youtube videos" will get you loads of websites.
nah, that's just for flash video files which rte doesn't use yet (but they will soon when they launch an iplayer-type equivalent.)

To yoink those real-media streams, download the corresponding .smil file (this is basically a bookmarker file for real streams, RTE just captures the entire show in one .rm file and inserts bookmarks for each piece e.g. news segments on the news programs.) In the .smil file you'll see an rstp url, grab that and paste it into Net Transport and voila, you'll have the original .rm which you can transcode to whatever format you want.
