I was born by the river
In a little tent
And just like the river
I've been running ever since

It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change gonna come
Oh, yes it is

It's been too hard living
But I'm afraid to die
I don't know what's up there beyond the sky

It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change gonna come
Oh yes it will

Then I go to my brother
I say brother help me please
But he winds up knocking me
Back down on my knees

There's been times that I thought
I wouldn't last for long
But now I think I'm able to carry on
It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change is gonna come
Oh, yes it will

Cooke was shot to death by Bertha Franklin, the manager of the Hacienda Motel, where Cooke had checked in earlier that evening. Franklin claimed that Cooke had broken into the manager's office/apartment in a rage, wearing nothing but a shoe and an overcoat (and nothing beneath it) demanding to know the whereabouts of a woman who had accompanied him to the motel. Franklin said that the woman was not in the office and that she told Cooke this, but the enraged Cooke did not believe her and violently grabbed her demanding again to know the woman's whereabouts. According to Franklin, she grappled with Cooke, the two of them fell to the floor, and she then got up and ran to retrieve her gun. She said that she then fired at Cooke in self-defense because she feared for her life. According to Franklin, Cooke exclaimed, "Lady, you shot me" before finally falling, mortally wounded.

Yeah, Amazing vocals on that song.

Whats his other stuff like?
Is it best to go for a greatest hits or some particular album...?

The Man Who Invented Soul has 93 songs and it's amazing. Listening to it in work at the minute.

Have you heard that track of his - "You're always on my mind" ? This will stop a charging elephant in its tracks and reduce it to tears...it's just fucking outstanding.

Try and get Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers.

Early gospel shit. Really brings to light the the roots of soul music for me.

His rendition of What A Wonderful World is pretty feckin amazing too.

What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong? I aint heard him doing that, or do you mean Wonderful World, that he wrote?

Yeah I mean the one he wrote. Didn't know he rit it because I've heard a few other versions. I had the title wrong, sorry.

Otis Reddings version of this is probably my favourite soul song

I don't claim to be an 'A' student,
But I'm tryin' to be.
For maybe by being an 'A'-student, baby,
I can win your love for me.

Don't know much about history,
Don't know much biology.
Don't know much about a science book,
Don't know much about the french I took.
But I do know that I love you,
And I know that if you love me, too,
What a wonderful world this would be

Technically the title you said isn't wrong - the Sam cooke one (co-written with a pair of dudes) is called (What A) Wonderful World. I was just wonderin if he'd done a cover of What a Wonderful World (no brackets) that I hadn't heard is all.

And I've also just discovered, through my extensive research* that What a Wonderful World (no brackets) was written by someone calle Bob Theilson in the 20s or thereabouts. Facts almighty!

I also adore Otis' version of A change is gonna come. I was BOOOOOOOORRRRN.....

I saw Inner Space on a 17 hour ferry journey to Cherbourg in 1988. Probably the greatest film ever made.
