Rusted Rail Proudly presents "A Night With Johnny Moynihan" on Tuesday April 24th at the Roisin Dubh (Upstairs). Johnny will be accompanied on the night by Mark Gregory and the show will be opened by special guests The Driftwood Manor.

Johnny Moynihan needs no introduction to anyone familiar with Irish Folk music but just incase here’s a potted history of the man…

Moynihan first made his impact felt as a member of Sweeney's Men. Formed in 1966 with Andy Irvine and Joe Dolan, Sweeney's Men was one of Ireland's modern folk-traditional groups. The band was a sensation from the onset, with their debut single, "Old Maid in the Garret," reaching number two on the Irish music charts. Sweeney's Men broke the mould of Irish music and are credited with starting the folk revival there in the late 1960s. The group made two albums, “Sweeney's Men” and “The Tracks of Sweeney”. In the 1970’s Moynihan was famously associated with the folk singer Anne Briggs and both of them traded off their mutual inclination for wild behaviour. He plays backing guitar on several Anne Briggs songs. Replacing Donal Lunny in Planxty in July 1973 for their album “Cold Blow and the Rainy Night”, Moynihan helped to usher in a new era of modern Celtic music. He returned to more traditional sounds as a member of De Danann, and can be heard on their second album, “Selected Jigs, Reels & Songs”. Moynihan went his own way and for a period of time fronted the Fleadh Cowboys, a popular band in 1980s Dublin. In 2006, Moynihan could often be seen playing live in an east-Clare based trio called Moonshine, performing old-time Appalachian music. Don’t miss this chance to spend an evening in the company of Johnny Moynihan: singer, songster, instrumental innovator, itinerant minstrel, legend.

Doors: 9pm sharp. Admission: 8euro.

would love to be at this. Have seen the planxty lads in various guises through the years but never got to see Moynihan. Will do at the Andy Irvine birthday bash.

Have always been a huge fan - the planxty era with him is probably my favourite and though Sweeney's Men never hit those heights, they have lots and lots of amazing stuff.

enjoy this anyone who goes.
