My signature is a quote of his.

As a little bit of trivia, he wrote 'Welcome to the Monkey House', which the Dandy Warhols used as a title to a shit album they produced.

But the book (of short stories) is still brilliant.

Brilliant writer.
I love him.

He was great in 'Back to School' too.

"Hey Kurt! (over the phone) Can you read lips? FUCK YOU!"

"The formation flew backwards over a German city that was in flames. The bombers opened their bomb bay doors, exerted a miraculous magnetism which shrunk the fires, gathered them in cylindrical steel containers, and lifted the containers into the bellies of the planes. The containers were stored neatly in racks.......When the bombers got back to their base, the steel cylinders were taken from the racks and shipped back to the United States of America, where factories were operating night and day, dismantling the cylinders, separating the dangerous contents into minerals. Touchingly it was mainly women who did this work. The minerals were then shipped to specialists in remote areas. It was their business to put them into the ground, to hide them cleverly, so they would never hurt anybody ever again."
From Slaughterhouse Five...beautiful piece of writing.

Now we know where Martin Amis got the idea for Time's Arrow.

Re: So it goes...

love timequake. bluebeard. s5. etc etc

RIP

Very sad - but he has had a long life. There was a great quote there in a BBC interview with him last year.

Vonnegut also said that he felt "embarrassed" to have lived to the age of 83.
"It's in terrible taste," he said.
"I had a fire several years ago, and it would have been so shapely if I'd died in that - but here I am.
"I'm suing a cigarette company because on the package they promised to kill me, and yet here I am," he joked.

I'd just re-read Bluebeard over the weekend. Like someone was saying, he is one of those authors that if you start reading a book of his, you'll end up reading a few in a row. I remember reading Breakfast of Champions, Cat's Cradle, Slaughterhouse 5 and Bluebeard in the space of a fortnight. Trying to pick up a book by any other author at that time, it just seemed dull in comparism.

Has anyone read A Man Without A Country - the book of essays that came out the other year? How does it compare to the novels? I think I'll give this a read now.
