Rachel's appreciation... (1 Viewer)

They have day jobs unrelated to music I think, possibly they have families?.. They're all still based in Louisville, so my guess is that it's not a full time pursuit in any financial way.

The most recent output is the score for Greg King's Rotating Mirror film piece. There's a new track below plus a piece from the outt akes collection Significent others.

Thanks Wheels

Rachels fans should check that Max Richter kid
Blue Notebooks is sweet

He's not quite as good but well worth checking out alright. I actually prefer the more recent Songs From Before. New one due out over the next couple of weeks too I think...

For more Rachel's style goodness, check out the group 33.3 on Aesthetics and Threnody Ensemble on ATP. Both are pretty good, but not nearly as good as Rachel's.
Love that quote on the Egon Schiele liner notes about how "these pieces can only be appreciated by people who believe that there are some things which can only be expressed by music" (or something to that effect). Normally a sentence like that would bring me out in a rash, but in this case it's perfectly true.
By the way, has anyone heard the Significant Others collection? Been checking ebay over the years, but no sign.

A limited run self produced cd-r eh... that's gonna be hard to track down. Apparently there's 13 untitled tracks on it, and and it was sold at gigs years back. One for the torrents me thinks.

Yeah, you're prob right. Still like to have a physical copy though. I do have the Technology is Killing Music ep. Very nice stuff, like an extension of Systems/Layers.

You've only liked them for 7/8 years!

indeed - if ya weren't in on the ground floor in 95 with "handwriting" then where were ya;) if ya got into them then and ya heard their albums in order then its been downhill (not a burn!) from then on....their first record's pretty phenomenal, full on night and m.daguerre in particular. egon and seabells are lovely too and from then on i think they went on autopilot. rachels on cruisecontrol still wipes the floor with sigur ros and anyone else who uses strings, imho. ultra-rachels nerds will know that 'bible silver corner' from rodan's only album is techncally the first rachel's track.....wonderful!!!

rachel's and tortoise made 1995 bearable in the face of britpopsludge (discuss!).....

like what? haven't heard a peep out of Rachel Grimes in years.

This is kinda what I wanted to do in the 'where are they now' thread until it got wrecked, but in the stylings of Unsolved Mysteries -

UPDATE!

According to Quartersticks' site, Rachel Grimes is currently recording a solo self released album titled Book Of Leaves. No details as for when it will see the light of day, but this is where you'll hear it first. maybe.

She also opened a few 'shows' as Hansard might call them now, for Swell Season at the beginning of the Summer.

Rachel Grimes 'Book of Leaves' is to be released on September 22nd. There's a couple of tracks up on her myspace http://www.myspace.com/rachelgrimespiano 'Rachel has completed a new solo piano album, a collection of serene contemplations called "Book of Leaves". Sparse, impressionist chapters woven together with chordal themes and field recordings inspired by interactions with the outdoors in her native Kentucky. The album was recorded in the Recital Hall at Indiana University Southeast by Tim Haertel and mastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Company. Karate Body Records will be releasing a limited edition of 12" vinyl albums. The first 100 will contain a hand-printed sheet music book.' http://www.karatebodyrecords.com/category/rachel-grimes/?submit=GO And for something less sombre, she's also playing with a bunch of Louisville alumni under the name 'King’s Daughters & Sons'. They remind more of The Sonora Pine/For Carnation folkiness than Rachel's sound. http://www.myspace.com/kingsdaughtersandsons
