I'm confused.
What's the difference between the public sector and the civil service?
Did a bit of wiki searching and only really got stuff about the British system.
I know the public sector in teachers, garda, etc
So what exactly do the civil service do.
Is there a difference?
Is there some crossover?

More importantly, why are the public sector being hit and the civil service not? Or are they?

I'm confused.

yea - it can be a little confusing.

generally civil servants are employees of government departments

and public sector employees can be more broadly governmental related emplyees - e.g. teachers, QUANGO staff etc.

some public sector emplyees can work for part funded contract work on behalf of the civil service.

Broadly, civil servants work in the department of whatever. Public servants include civil servants as well as other government employees, such as teachers, nurses and people employed by state agencies (like me).

Public servants and civil servants all work in the public sector. When the government talk about the public sector being hit, they are including civil servants in this as well.

Basically, there are three groups.

One group is armed (cops, soldiers, Limerick, etc.).
One group isn't (Departmental staff).
The other has shovels, spades, textbooks, lollipops, medicine, buses and the like. The stuff that keeps a country running. The civilisation, if you will.

Without them, there'd be chaos.

I was at a seminar the other day on "economic policy and the recession" - There were people from ministerial advisory groups, Quangos, civil servants, MPs etc.

I'd like to add that I was the youngest by about 15 years and the only one not in a suit.!baggyyyy

There was quite a bit of discussion on the need for innovation in the public sector and in the delivery of public services, business support blah blah blah

Some people were saying the public sector is crying out for creative and innovative individuals.

Some others pointed to the fact the problem isn't recruiting clever and creative people, the problem is what happens to those people once they enter the civil service...... zzzooooommmmmbiiiiieeeeessss

what the fudge is a "quango"? sounds like an exotic fruit.

"Quango or qango is an [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acronym"]acronym[/ame] (variously spelt out as QUAsi Non-Governmental Organization, QUasi-Autonomous Non-Governmental Organization, and QUasi-Autonomous National Government Organization) used notably in the [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom"]United Kingdom[/ame] but also in [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia"]Australia[/ame], [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Ireland"]Ireland[/ame] and elsewhere to label [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colloquialism"]colloquially[/ame] an [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organization"]organization[/ame] to which [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government"]government[/ame] has [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devolution"]devolved[/ame] power. Lack of clarity over its meaning may have contributed to a decline somewhat in its use. The acronym can carry with it an implication of poor [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Management"]management[/ame] and lack of [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accountability"]accountability[/ame]."

Cool - thanks guys. That's kinda how I had it figured in my head.
Been browsing Boards a lot and the out and out hositility shown by people towards the public sector is shocking. That's what got me thinking about it.
People bitching about other people because of their jobs, it's terrible.

Did you not know the public sector is directly responsible for this whole mess we're in? The entire economic downturn is the fault of the nurses and their ilk! And the closure of Road Records too! And probably the bulk of the paedophilia in this country as well!

It'll end in lynch mobs I tell ya ...

Turning the ire of the general public away from the government/bankers/estate agents/developers/investors towards the public sector is one of the greatest political masterstrokes Fianna Fail have pulled off yet.
