Can someone tell me how to export PDFs from Quark Xpress. It tells me a PostScript printer must be set up but I don't know what that means.

I also tried saving it as an EPS to open in illustrator and export the PDF from there but illustrator couldn't read the file.

what version of quark is it? v6 lets you export directly as pdf (under file menu). with older versions you had to use Distiller and it could get messy.

last resort, open your Quark EPS in photoshop (it gets rasterised) then save as pdf from there. File will be much bigger but gets the job done.

Neither of those is an Ideal option.

The PDF output from Quark is not a "real" PDF. Its a generic made by Enfocus. For "real" PDFs, you should be using distiller and up-to-date Postscript Printer Drivers from Adobe.

If you can get these, I'll send you some optimised presets off-list for Plate Press, News Press & Screen purposes. Saving PDFs from Pshop or Illustrator is just a trumped up AI or possibly EPS file. Rasterising an EPS will "get the job done" but it's pointless. Yes, you can make a PDF, but it will only be a JPEG, encapsulated in a PDF, so you may as well send an optimised JPEG. The process is basically the same for PC and MAC, bar a few obvious differences.

1. Finish your Project.

2. Print to a Postscript File using appropriate settings.

3. Open Distiller.

4. Use an appropriate preset or make your own.

5. Drop your PS file onto the Distiller.

6. Bingo.

If you don't know what Postscript is, google it, or check the Adobe site for the PDF & PS White Papers

Agreed. But if you have things are mad and you have a printer that "insists" on a pdf and you're encountering pdf problems it is enough to get plates made and the thing printed. Which is what matters. Sometimes the route can be a windy one.
