Outsider music in Ireland? (1 Viewer)

It's possible but most musicians know quite a bit about music and other musicians and outsider music isn't "posed". It would be a pose for most musicians. There's nothing stopping them making music like that. It's similar to naive art, it is sometimes done by acomplished knowing artists but it's a schtick and people crave authenticity in music and I don't think you could authentically make music the way outsiders do without there being a break between you and other musicians, if ya get me.

God, that was perhaps my worst post ever. .

i thought it was one of your best.

i get ya, i'm right there with ya.

mostly i was trying to point the thread in a direction that would mean i could post some people without suggesting they were mentally ill on a public forum.

Outside by definition means 'outside of common practice' which includes the so-called avant-garde. Avant-garde practictioners will not engage in the common practice while outsiders usually cannot. Many famous outsiders get a lot of help from 'insider' friends Wesley Willis from Jello Biafra; Daniel Johnston from Kramer and Sonic youth; Aidan Walsh from Simon Carmody and Gavin Friday.

If anyone is looking for a crash course in outsider music they could do worse than to start with these two comps. Vol 1 is better than Vol 2 but they're both pretty great to one degree or another

Spot on! The book is a really illuminating read.
The thing with the majority of artists featured on it is they were not 'wilfully' obscure/avante garde etc - personally I see a big difference between someone who is deliberately trying to create 'out there' music, and somene who believes their music is 'normal', even though to others it is strange or bizarre.
That's not a criticism obviously of wilfully out-there people, just an observation. In my mind there's a big difference between a lot of the Irish bands mentioned on this thread and someone like Wesley Willis, or The Shaggs.

curious about daniel johnston, why do people like him? seems to me he is a terrible singer and guitarist and has serious mental problems.

Do you count the Stars in Heaven? Will you play football again?
Do you count the Stars in Heaven? Are you with Tom Regan now?

Where did you go?
To a Flax Field
Or Tall Pines?

Chorus
Do you count the stars in Heaven?
Will You play football again?
Do you count the stars in Heaven?
Are you with Tom Ragen now?

Castleblaney, Breffini Park
Does a whistle turn your head
Playing draughts
You grope a knight
Do your riddles still sound out?

Chorus

Reardons, Two Ronnies,
Harry Worth, Panaroma too
Is your Hillman still in town?
Just a memory of your name.
