NWCI: Lobby your TDs on the immediate need for legislation to give effect to the X case
The National Women's Council of Ireland is calling on the Irish people to lobby their TDs on the immediate need for legislation to give effect to the X case. This is in keeping with the NWCIs long standing policy on the X Case.*
Speaking at the Launch of the NWCI and HSE Report “Equal but Different: A framework for integrating gender equality in Health Service Executive Policy, Planning and Service Delivery” today , Orla O’Connor, Director of the National Women’s Council said:
“We are shocked and saddened about Savita Halappanavar’s death and would like to express our sincere condolences to her husband and his family and friends. Based on the reports in the media her death was horrific and needless and may have been prevented by terminating the pregnancy earlier.”
She continued:
“It is simply unacceptable that 20 years after the X Case ruling women and doctors are still waiting for the much needed legal clarity. Savita Halappanavar’s death tragically highlights the urgent need for legislation giving effect to the constitutional right to abortion where the life of the mother is at risk. The NWCI calls on the government to take immediate action and legislate for X.”
Take action and ask your TD to make legislation for the X Case a priority for the government. Your action will make a difference to ensure that we do not have to wait another 20 years for legislation to implement the constitutional right to an abortion in cases where the life of the mother is at risk. TDs need to hear from the 79% of the population who believe abortion should be available in certain circumstances. Thank you for your support!
