New music for 2024 (1 Viewer)

the new Jessica Pratt record is so good. Can't recommend it enough. The songs that don't jump out initially do so over a few listens.

free / name your price on bandcamp. really nice guitar work. Chile seemed to a late comer to punk (90s??) but seems to have a big scene full of good bands for decades now.

I paid for this just to see if a faulty bank app would stop transaction.
Bandcamp home page posts all the recent purchases scrolling across - about 90 seconds after my purchase of the B.S. demo it scrolled across screen. Three purchases before that was a PARANOID VISIONS record. I noticed two different people buying SHELLAC stuff. Loads of things i never heard of then the odd well known thing and then something I'd like such as WOLF EYES & JOHN WEISE

Very bittersweet listening to the new shellac today. Does sound marvellous though

Shellac are on the cover of this month's Wire magazine which went to press before Steve Albini died.

I only got (finally) Spotify this month.
Yeah - I see why people like it:
Free, extremely few adverts compared to YouTube, can play in background on phone and it is generally very user friendly.

Lists make it easy to investigate genres - listening to Congolese Lingala* mixes today + other Soukous stuff which folks at an Africa Day event were playing today. (Lingala is language spoken by 8 million folks).
Knew stuff like Papa Wemba already through John Peel but now know a lot more. Also got some great suggestions on Turkish psych artists I didn't know. SoundCloud do mixes like this as well.

But I've got some really predictable suggestions in genres I know well and the contemporary suggestions I get are nearly all boring and bland - so far.

Paid or free version?

I've only ever used the paid one. I get the impression the free one is shit.

I use very little of the suggestions from Spotify.
If I did use them I'd be listening to an awful lot of music I don't like

Free version - so far I have encountered almost no adverts.
The issue is occasionally things I didn't pick start playing automatically and they tend to be not great.

When I was looking at the suggestions,I'd get offered new releases that were 2+ years old and well known bands that I have known I don't like for a very long time. I'll occasionally dip in and find no change.

Definitely not one and done.
