anyone got any new/innovative/bright ideas on how to go about releasing and distributing independently recorded music?

I get the basics of course like you'll only get some reaction if its actually good and recorded to a basic level of quality.

But in these days when there is so much music out there through so many media, how do you get people to even give it a first/good listen?

Give the mp3s away for free online or have a free stream online so people can hear it, and if it's good, they'll buy it. But it has to be a reasonable price, and a unique package. A CD in a plastic case isn't really very appealing. But if you offer something in lovely packaging + some limited/rare goodies, like unique hand made album art, you're sure to get more attention.
