...on getting the best sound for bedroom recording heavy (mental distorted) and clean electric guitar through amps?

We're recording into a PC, here's a breakdown of the gear we're using:

PC: AMD Duron 800Mhz, 128mb ram, Seagate Barracuda ATA11 HDD, Soundblaster Live Platinum, Cubasis VST.

mics: Rode NT1, Shure SM58,

mixing desk: Behringer MX1604 desk

Its mainly advice on mic positions I need, such as if having two mics set up (1 amp, 1 ambient) is a worthwhile idea for instance.

Any help is much appreciated, cheers!

what size amp you using??

I used to use my carlsbro rebel 1 x 12" combo for recording dirty geetar sounds, and found one mic just off centre of the speaker cone about 4 to 6 inches back was good

BUT I've started using smaller amps for distorted sounds and have found a small amp (like my tiny marshall thing, or a small practise amp) can sound great turned up to full whack and mic'd in a similar manner to the carlsbro. bacuse the smaller amps distort at lower volumes you can really crank them up. and the smaller speakers tend to keep the high end and mid together a lot better.

just a thought

we're using a large peavy amp with 2 speaker cones (don't ask me the specs of it, I'm shite when it comes to amps). I'll try out the small practice amp suggestion cheers
