Mumia faces death penalty or life imprisonment
The Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia has ruled against a new trial for Mumia Abu-Jamal. They have called for a sentencing hearing which can result in either an execution or life in prison without parole.
It is critical that all those in support of Mumia come out and voice their anger and outrage at this decision. We need to mobilise now to demand his immediate freedom!
Mumia has been imprisoned on death row for a quarter of a century, convicted of a crime he did not commit. He was framed for the murder of a Philadelphia police officer because of his history of political activism and his record as a journalist who was not afraid to speak out for the oppressed. The US courts have refused to admit a wealth of evidence that proves his innocence, including the confession of a man who said he killed the police officer. His case dramatically illustrates the racism that lies at the heart of the US justice system and particularly in the use of the death penalty. Winning Mumia's freedom will be a victory for all oppressed people that will resonate around the world.
Protests in Ireland and around the world can have an important effect. In 1995 a wave of international protest prevented Mumia's execution, even after a date had been set. We need to do it again – and this time win his unconditional release!
Mumia is innocent!
