Funny, I just read the Omelas story a few days ago, working my way through LeGuin short story collection.

Mad read on how China utterly played itself with the one-child policy
How it was propagated by a rocket scientist (Mao had all the actual social scientists murdered during the Cultural Revolution), deeply flawed and failed to account for human behaviour

The Chinese are at a birth rate of about 1 child per woman - under half the replacement rate.

They could have lowered the birth rate naturally just by doing what they did anyway - having a capitalist economy empower women. But these central planner, top-down, Communist party types have never trusted their own people enough to do the right thing.
They'd rather murder their own people, imprison them, force sterilisations on them and you-fucking name it.
Amazing people. A horrorshow of a system.
