Arthur Russell's Instrumentals
Directed by Peter Gordon
TRISKEL CHRISTCHURCH, CORK
Fri 22 May, 8:00pm
TICKETS
We're delighted to be hosting the European premiere of Arthur Russell's Instrumentals directed by Peter Gordon on Fri 22 May, performed by members of the original 1970s ensemble alongside more recent additions to the downtown New York scene.
This is a highly anticipated tour, so much so that the London show sold out in less than thirty minutes.
David Kitt - a long-time admirer of the work of Russell - will also be doing a special one-off live performance in tribute to Arthur Russell on the night in the intimate environs of Gulpd after the main show. Kitt's music, too, spans genres: from the early work which gained him notoriety, through contemporary electronic excursions as New Jackson (not to mention countless other endeavours), echoes of Arthur are never too far beneath the surface. The night will be completed by Arthur-inspired DJ sets from Dean Feeney, Lisa Lemur and John Byrne until late.*
*Gulpd events only open to 'Instrumentals' ticket holders
Instrumentals is one of Arthur Russell’s most important concert works; performed live six times to date, it was inspired by the nature photography of Yuko Nonomura. The premiere took place in Berkeley, California in January 1975. As a composition it continued to evolve and change as Russell and his ensemble performed it in music venues throughout New York City over the next four years. Considered to be part of the minimalist movement of the time, it featured one of the first pairings of pop and concert hall aesthetics and was the first exploration of its kind in the vibrant downtown New York scene.
It has been described by Pitchfork as: “a masterpiece…up there with World Of Echo as Arthur Russell’s greatest achievement.”
In March 2012, almost twenty years after Arthur Russell’s death, Peter Gordon unveiled his new reading of Instrumentals at a sold-out performance in New York City’s renowned arts centre, The Kitchen. The performance featured several members of Arthur Russell’s original ensemble plus more recent additions to the downtown New York scene.

Rhys Chatham: flute
Peter Zummo (The Lounge Lizards): trombone
Ernie Brooks (The Modern Lovers): bass
