“Perch Patchwork is eclectic and consistent…each detour offers its own small reward.” – Pitchfork

“Maps & Atlases's music offers every bit of the exhilaration of virtuosity, but it's not about showing off. It's about getting all those ideas out before the next one crowds in.” – The New York Times

“Perch Patchwork showcases the band’s songwriting chops with the intricate technical aspects of prog-art rock while keeping an accessible pop undertone.” - Filter
“This Chicago four-piece weld the intricate quirks of Animal Collective with a backdrop of clomping wooden guiros and woozy synths, while mastering the vocal melancholy of TV On The Radio so majestically that singer [Dave Davison] sounds like a Tunde Adebimpe in the making.” - NME

Chicago’s progressive songsmiths Maps & Atlases make their Irish debut in Whelan’s on Saturday, October 23.

Known for their virtuosic musical ability, Maps & Atlases write pop songs with a magnificent aptitude for texture and a distinctive blend of both the intricate and organic. The members of Maps & Atlases met in Chicago while attending art school at Columbia College. Shiraz Dada, Chris Hainey, Dave Davison, and Erin Elders first came together trying to find a sound that was both technical and organic, in the same vein as their influences Don Caballero and Hella. They subsequently released two EPs through Sargent House. While Tree, Swallows, Houses showcased the band’s more technical side, the subsequent You And Me And The Mountain presented more earthly and digestible songs that earned comparisons to TV On The Radio, Deerhoof, CAN, and even Prince.

Maps and Atlases offer songs that wrestle themselves from flailing, algebraic fits of spazzy guitar notes and drum ruptures to lulling, voice-driven melodies that speak stories using lyrical images, creating a distinctive blend of the intricate and organic. Barsuk Records released their debut album in June this year. Perch Patchwork was produced by Jason Cupp (The Elected, Nurses, Cast Spells). The band’s unique style melds the technicality of progressive music and the idiosyncrasies of art rock into a fascinating and oddly accessible sound all their own.
“It was great to be able to step outside of our live setting and imagine the songs in a different way,” said guitarist Erin Elders about the recording process for Perch Patchwork. “Jason Cupp brought another dimension to the songs that was really exciting to hear. We were able to deconstruct them part by part and then rebuild each verse or chorus with a different sonic idea.”

Adebisi Shank: Touring Japan for the third time, being handpicked by Mike Patton to support Faith No More in the Olympia, writing and recording their second album – it’s been a hell of a year for Wexford based lightning punks Adebisi Shank. Long been the darlings of the underground scene and after countless tours of Ireland, UK and mainland Europe the band prepare to release their eagerly awaited follow up to the J. Robbins produced debut album, This is the album of a band called Adebisi Shank.

That debut, which AU magazine was to declare 11th best Irish album of the decade and Hot Press 74th best Irish album of all time (Voted for by Irish Musicians), was a 25 minute runaway tornado of euphoria that left listeners dazed, confused, and hungry for more. This new full length somehow manages to expand the bands musical horizons to incorporate a host of different influences and yet focus their songwriting chops even further than on their 2007 EP and 2008 LP.

“On the first album, our mission was get in, tear it up, get out” explains bassist Vin (Who also produces under the name The Vinny Club in his downtime), “The whole thing is over in about 24 minutes, which is really cool, but this time we wanted to make something that you could really spend a bit of time with, get a bit lost in. This one’s 40 minutes, which might not sound a lot, but to us that is almost like a double album. There’s a real sense of geography to the songs, you can really feel the places we’ve been and to an extent, the people we’ve met as we’ve travelled around. It seemed to make sense to bring in as many of our friends as we could to give the album the party vibe we felt it deserved.” He continues, “It’s a big glorious mess.”

Adebisi Shank are mostly known for their explosive and energetic live performances, NME describing it as,“baffling, terrifying and utterly riveting” and Rock Sound exclaiming the band are “…one of the most exciting live bands in Ireland right now.”
This is the Second Album of a Band Called Adebisi Shank features contributions from Mercury prize nominated Villagers frontman Conor J O Brien and Choice Prize winner Richie “Jape” Egan among others, and sees Adebisi Shank broaden their sonic palette beyond the trusty formula of bass drums and guitars to incorporate electronics, marimba, horn sections, vocoders, percussion ensembles and an arsenal of vintage synthesisers while still using the traditional three piece line-up to experiment with sounds as much as possible. The album was recorded and produced by the band and Stephen J. Caffrey in various locations around Ireland and mixed and mastered by TJ Lipple at his home in Washington DC.

Any times for this? I'm always asking that but it's nice to be able to sit in a quiet pub until about 5 minutes before the bands start. I also wouldn't mind getting down to see VisionAir too.

Feck I now really want to go to this but the wolf is at the door. Feck. Also, I'll be a massive loner at it. Maybe I'll stay on the internet.
