I saw this band twice. Once in Doran's a few years ago when they had the haircuts, the leather jackets and a number of slow-paced two chord droning tuneless imitations of JAMC. Then I saw them in the HWCH festival a couple of years ago and they were, to my surprise, much better. The same schtick, the same heroes shamelessly copied, but they were a bit brisker and bit more tuneful and it was quite enjoyable.
There's nothing wrong with grabbing ideas from here, there and everywhere and trying to come up with something more than the sum of those ingredients but Mainline were/are far too narrow in scope. They have some bloody-minded, strictly defined idea of what is cool and they just try really hard to be exactly the same (in music, lyrics, image, absolutely everything). That can be fun on its own terms and in small doses. Probably beats a band who have no idea of how to present themselves or put on any kind of a spectacle for the punters, which could be said of the vast majority of acts.
