KIMYA DAWSON, STRAND OF OAKS, NEOSUPERVITAL AND HURRICANE RELIEF THROUGH MUSIC
The Lower Deck, Portobello
Friday, 16th September, 2005
Doors 8:30
€12
DUBLIN – 12 SEPTEMBER 2005 – Hive Mind Promotions presents a night with Kimya Dawson (USA), Strand of Oaks (USA) and Neosupervital (IRL). Doors open at 8:30, and tickets are 12 euro at the door.
She is known as part of the anti-folk group The Moldy Peaches, but Kimya Dawson has stories of her own to tell.
This is not a benefit gig, but Hive Mind Promotions will also be taking up a collection for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, to be sent to relief workers in New Orleans, who will distribute it in the community where they see the greatest need. Kimya Dawson has started a donations programme of her own, called RELIEF THROUGH MUSIC, for teenagers who have been displaced by the hurricane. Thousands of children and teenagers have lost everything, and while they need monetary donations, and basic needs like shelter and food are the dominant priority, returning some of the former quality of life these people once had is also important: music is nourishment, too. Music is central to the lives of so many young people: giving back some of their music is not just a thoughtful donation, but a sign of solidarity, a bestowing of a little bit of the dignity that must be lost when one’s entire material world has been destroyed. Some of the strongest musical traditions in the world have come out of the American south: especially in New Orleans, music is a form of nourishment necessary for cultural survival.
Kimya asks, "Please, go through your music collections and your closets and find things that are collecting dust. So many of us have upgraded our music players and lost interest in things we used to listen to…Ask your friends to donate stuff. ask local stores to donate stuff. maybe you don't have a cd player but maybe you could spare $10 to send a gift card. Ask bands you know to donate some of their albums. Ask record labels to make donations. I can't imagine being a teenager and going through tough times without my music."
The folk traditions that underline Kimya’s own work owe much to the strong influences of early American music, a tradition in which, rather than being precious about their particular music, people see music as a precious thing in itself.
Kimya will be accompanied on the Dublin date by Ireland’s own Neosupervital, the one-man-electro-band, an alter-ego of Tim O’Donovan (also of Island/Universal label’s Bell X1). Neosupervital spins his tales with a synth-guitar, a sharp suit, a pair of mesmerising sunglasses and his own corporeal beatbox. He has been known to breakdance.
Kimya and Strand of Oaks are playing the following Irish dates:
Tuesday 13th September -- The Roisin Dubh, Galway
Wednesday 14th September -- Pine Lodge, Myrtleville, Co Cork
Thursday 15th September – Pine Lodge, Myrtleville, Co Cork
Friday 16th September – with Neosupervital – The Lower Deck, Portobello, Dublin
Saturday 17th September – The Pavilion Bar, Belfast
