THE NEW MENDICANTS
Whelans - Sunday 7th July
Two of the most sublime and revered songwriters of the 1990s, Norman Blake and Joe Pernice between them have founded Teenage Fanclub, Scud Mountain Boys, BMX Bandits and Pernice Brothers. Performing together on stage, they delve into each other's hefty back catalogues as well as their new material.
Finding themselves newly resident of Toronto, Canada, Norman Blake and Joe Pernice were re-introduced care of Pernice Brothers drummer Patrick Berkley who had been working with Norman in musician/ producer roles with Norwegian band, I Was A King.
A rendezvous swiftly arranged, ‘Within minutes of hanging out in my kitchen we were booking recording dates’ says Joe, the pair making their first low-key public performances in a Toronto tavern – shows marked by plenty of banter, open-tunings and sublime pop smarts.
Formalizing their partnership as The New Mendicants, the pair are currently recording a debut album (also featuring Mike Belisky of The Sadies) for release in early 2014.
By way of an introduction, their ‘Australia 2013’ EP (One Little Indian, 8th July) boasts three new compositions, an unexpected and lovely INXS cover, and also revisits Teenage Fanclub’s ‘I Don’t Want Control Of You’*and The Pernice Brothers ‘Amazing Glow’~ along the way.
The New Mendicants bring their two-man show to these shores for a live date in Whelans on 7th JULY 2013.
