LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Johnny Ramone, the lead guitarist with the influential U.S. punk rock band the Ramones, has died after a five-year battle with prostate cancer. Ramone, 55, who was born John Cummings, died in his sleep at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday afternoon, said Arturo Vega, the Ramones' creative director.

The Ramones, famed for playing their high-energy, unpolished songs at breakneck speed, rose to fame in New York City in the 1970s, paving the way for such punk rock icons as the Sex Pistols and the Clash.

But unlike most punks, Ramone was an outspoken Republican who once declared Ronald Reagan the best U.S. president of his lifetime.

yeah die for putting together a shitty spoken word tour, jaysus, at leats tommy still lives, have a deadly interview he did last year with LEFT OF THE DIAL ZINE, man that guy hated Johnny, and he seemed to eb the most diy ramone. respect.

Total wanker. Don't care what band he was in.

Whether he was a wanker or not is immaterial (and apparently he was an acquired taste on a 1-to-1 level) - he and the Ramones produced some of the best Rock'n'Roll ever made.

Fucking shit one, he was the driving force of The Ramones.

Get yourself copies of the first three albums and post your grovelling apologies.

he was a nazi, but not anymore...
Wasn't he more of a kkk lad then a nazi?!

He was neither. Rather, he was unashamedly right-wing (in a mainstream american sense) and yes he admitted he enjoyed "liberal-baiting" as he put it, but he was never involved in supporting far-right causes or anything like that. It doesn't matter either that Joey was left-wing or Johnny was right-wing - their individual political leanings are of absolutely no consequence. Johnny Ramone was an integral part of one of the best Rock'n'Roll bands we've had the good fortune to enjoy, and for that alone we should be grateful. Amen and RIP Johnny Ramone.

He's hardly going to tell you if he was a member of the kkk, you sound like his ma "my johnny was the best" etc. etc.!

He's hardly going to tell you if he was a member of the kkk,

Johnny was (apparently) quite open and occasionally obnoxious with his political opinions, so if he was a KKKer he'd would have been quite forthcoming about it. His brand of politics was more Rudy Giuliani-style from what I can make out.

you sound like his ma "my johnny was the best" etc. etc.!

Well, she's hardly gonna call him second best, is she? Anyway, it's not a case of Johnny being the best, it's a case of The Ramones being the best. And generally speaking, I always believe in not speaking ill of the recently departed no matter who they are. This kind of macabre coffin-kicking seems to have become acceptable (and positively fashionable if you're Kevin Myers, who likes nothing better than duffing up the odd corpse or two in his rant barely disguised as a column).

who cares if he was a nazi or a commie, he's still dead, you never knew him, you aren't really going to be affected by this, so why pretend it matters to you?

eh? surely if you idolise someone and they meant something to you for a very long time then it would affect you if they died, regardless of whether you knew them or not? Are you saying that there is not a single musician/artist/writer/etc on this planet that you would care about if they died?
