John Martyn (1 Viewer)

it was great

they had two brilliant guitarists on - Ry Cooder and Rory Gallagher

Rory Gallagher was un-be-lievable

Ry Cooder played Vigilante Man, which was the song what got me into slide gee-tar

t'was aces alright

but seriously though, the whole wah wah/delay/acoustic guitar thing John had going on. Amazing, even all the cheap 'trippy' camera effects they had going on, whole thing totally 'blew my mind'. man.

as did the hair on the guitarist in the average white band

did anyone see The Old Grey Whistle test last night on Beeb Two last night?

John Martyn played 'I'd Rather be the Devil' and F U C K I N G H E L L ! ! !

what that man can do with an acoustic guitar

It was class. First time I'd ever heard anything by that guy. Is 'Solid Air' worth getting a hold of?
Rory Gallagher's guitar looked like he'd been storing it outdoors for several months.

that show is so great,

roxy music on it last week - 1971 -

I'm not ahuge fab but they were just mindbending.

I'm going mad for mid 70's Brian Eno these days.

Its fecking glam-tastic

who cares if you can't sing or write decent lyrics and indeed all your tunes have two chords and sound the same. If you load the thing with crazy synths and get Phil Manzerararareeerrrr to play loopy guitar all over it, and wear a big feather boa, you *know* its going to be gold.

but saying that the second half of Before and After Science is very moving.

..solid air ...best ever.

Solid Air was written about his friend Nick Drake at the time.
Beautiful tune alright...

I saw John live in Galway a few years back and was blown away by it....
One of the musicians playing with him was playing one of these instruments

... it's like a cross between a bass and a guitar....amazing.

Are they doing re-runs of the Whistle test ?
What nights ?

Thursday around midnight on Beeb Two

joy

some Eno madness that made me giggle....

Solo für Eno

A German film (in English) by Henning Lohner from around 1992 which EnoWeb saw with a French commentary. Remarkable for the sequence when Brian makes a floppy rubber loudspeaker and then blows up his amplifier. Also for the sequence when he is asked to read out various quotes and has to do it in various vocal styles to give it any conviction. And for the part where the film-crew ask him if he can recommend any special sights in London to visit and he suggests the local fetish shop.
