JESSIE EVANS & TOBY DAMMIT BIOG

In 1995, an American teenage girl named JESSIE EVANS got a one-way ticket from California to London. She soon ended up in Dublin, where she spent eight months running wild in the streets, hanging out with the local punks, waitressing twelve-hour shifts with no break for two pounds an hour at local dives, and selling the BiG Issue.

After a year of busking, hitchhiking, train hopping and squatting her way across Europe, she returned to San Francisco, playing in a number of dirty art/punk groups; THE KNIVES, LEPER SEX KILLER ON THE LOOSE, DEEP THROATS, and SUBTONIX, who’s teenage girl angst became known in the USA underground for her wild screeching saxophone. In 2002 she formed THE VANISHING; a trio lead by her on her bass, saxophone and vocals. Their dark futuristic sound was excelled by her wild shimmying stage presence and their live shows proved Jessie to be one crazy girl to be reckoned with. Several US and European tours, three albums, and numerous singles later left audiences crying for more.

JESSIE formed AUTONERVOUS in 2003 and after some notable collaborations with Portland legends GLASS CANDY, she moved to Berlin. New European collaborations began with HANIN ELIAS (former singer from the German Digital Hardcore ATARI TEENAGE RIOT), electro prince NAMOSH and BETTINA KOSTER (singer from 80’s cold wave MALARIA!). The recently released AUTONERVOUS album (featuring BETTINA) was recorded in the winter of 2005 in Berlin. It was a turning point for JESSIE, as she was creating her own beats and moving into a sexier, minimal direction. JESSIE remains a Berliner, writing her new solo album and collaborating with drummer TOBY DAMMIT.

TOBY DAMMIT will be accompanying JESSIE EVANS for this rare Dublin show as a duo. DAMMIT, largely known for a nine year stint with IGGY POP, while simultaneously balancing a career with SWANS and THE RESIDENTS, has also recently settled in Berlin. His list of collaborators boggles the mind; RUFUS WAINRIGHT, KEREN ANN, DEVENDRA BANHART, RYAN ADAMS, STEPHAN EICHER, BERTRAND BURGALAT, MARK EITZEL, MICHAEL GIRA, JOHNNY DEPP, NEIL TENNANT...whew, let’s stop! Many a traveled mile this boy has seen since leaving his home mountains of Tennessee. His only prior Dublin appearance was in 1996 at The Mean Fiddler with IGGY; two notorious mad nights that left a mountain of stage destruction bills and a stunned & satisfied audience.

No doubt this February 23rd appearance at Maximum Joy offers Dubliners a rare glimpse of two of the most unusually prolific American musicians to be found in Europe sharing a stage at last and obviously not to be missed.

Rarely Seen Above Ground will be opening up the live aspect at the next Maximum Joy outing. Its going to be a mental night with some unbelievable drumming action courtesy of Jeremy & later Toby Dammitt...

RARELY SEEN ABOVE GROUND
Jeremy Hickey AKA Rarely Seen Above Ground is a multi-instrumentalist who happens to play drums. And now, on his new eight-track album he plays it all down! Every instrument in the mix on this extraordinary project was layered and laid down by Hickey himself; the textures are brilliant and the mood is glorious to see.

As one half of The Blue Ghost the NME referred to his music as an event that comes and goes from the “72% of the human brain we don’t normally use” and RSAG brings shape and clarity to that undiscovered space. He succeeds in setting these tones and moods in his music because he has an innate sense of sound and sight as feeling and mood. He recalls that "When I was nine or something around that time I used to collect paint tins, buckets and trays. With wooden spoons for sticks this was my first experience of what could be done with beats and tones."

With RSAG you can hear these tones for yourself because every sound is music to him and this album is rife with unusual hooks, menacing basslines and ungovernable, fitful rhythms. And yet if he refuses to govern he has nonetheless turned his armoury of instruments into a vehicle for euphonious percussion moodswings which are in turn blown fair by fresh, intermittent waves of unorthodox melodies. Harmony for RSAG is from leftfield and it soothes the cacophony with texture, texture always striking.

RSAG’s musical influences range from Fela Kuti to Radiohead and from Tortise to Talking Heads but musical culture is more than a mix tape and RSAG is a proper trigger for musical ideas. Give RSAG a listen and listen for the colour of serious sounds textured in the heart and head."
