CHARLES HAYWARD [THIS HEAT/CAMBERWELL NOW]
Drummer, singer, conceptualist and composer Charles Hayward has a long and illustrious career spanning progressive rock, industrial, heavy fusion, minimalism, and the current British experimental and Avant Garde scenes. For more than 30 years he's played and recorded solo and with bands like THIS HEAT, CAMBERWELL NOW and the later incarnation of MASSACRE with Bill Laswell and Fred Frith, among countless others. His propulsive energy, intense concentration, and considerately sardonic outlook on life come through in his songs and perfomances, a true iconoclast devoted to music and humanity.

Committed to song ‘but the shapes have to change’, his current one-man show is an intoxicating mix of percussive attack, swirling electronics and lyrical fragment collage.

'He sweats, there is saliva coming out of his mouth, and he looks ugly and beautiful at the same time and he is there.’ Jean-Herve Peron [Faust}

‘Telepathic magic…….Hayward is one of the most life-affirming people who stalks this dark globe.’ Sound Projector

‘Awesome.’ Freq.co.uk

FREQ: 'It was an amazing outpouring of energy; it’s contagious.
CH: 'That’s the idea of it.'

In 1976, Hayward and fellow RADAR FAVOURITES and DOLPHIN LOGIC member, Charles Bullen began practicing with bassist Gareth Williams under the name THIS HEAT. They began to experiment with tape loops, found sounds and keyboards on several sessions. In 1979 THIS HEAT released their eponymous debut album. 1981’s Deceit marked the final album from THIS HEAT, Williams leaving after its release. John Peel might have said it best when describing one of their BBC sessions, “I get asked to play more music like THIS HEAT, but to my knowledge there is no music like THIS HEAT”.

Deceit’ was recorded in the now famous Cold Storage Studios, which was built by members of THIS HEAT with the co-operation of LORA LOGIC and Phil Legg (Essential Logic). Cold Storage was used by a host of underground figures such as ESSENTIAL LOGIC, THE FLYING LIZARDS, TEST DEPARTMENT, GENERAL STRIKE, UT, THE ART BEARS, ROBERT WYATT, THE RAINCOATS, and not to mention MARTIN PIG, THE HOMOSEXUALS, DIE HAUT and including CAMBERWELL NOW, which Hayward formed with Trefor Goronwy and Stephen Rickard. The trio released several albums through Swiss label, RECOMMENDED.

When CAMBERWELL NOW disbanded in 1987 Hayward embarked on a solo career which has continued to the present day. He debuted with “Survive the Gesture” (1987), “Skew-whiff” (1989) “Switch on War” (1991) and “My Secret Alphabet” (1993). In 1998 Charles joined MASSACRE with Fred Frith and Bill Laswell. Hayward’s most recent solo project is “Abracadadra Info” (2004)

ZORILLA
A long and colourful history aside, Zorilla began as a child-eating devil in a Swiss ski-resort. Or was it Marko and Rosso writing tricksy surprising and dramatic instrumentals over a couple of years before bringing in the unique, raw-soul vocal tones of Keelin (along with songs she and Rosso had written, what with them being siblings and everything)? Add the un-macho
swagger of Gillo on guitar and lastly the studio savvy, percussive abuse and frequent indigestion of Diarmo and there you go! Zorilla!
