That's fucked up. There are big private prisons in the US as well, secret ones, the sort that, if you talk about them, there's no way to sound like anything other than a conspiracy-theory nutjob.

But these kinds of articles kind of worry me, like the Abu Ghraib situation: if this is what is allowed to leak out, what worse horror is it distracting us from?

Shaney- yep, the tender has been awared through the Public Private Partnership scheme to a consortium consisting of a very very wealthy building company, private equity investors, and some company who specialise in helping goverments to privatise their shit, including prisons, and here is what they say about prisoners:

"The philosophy of our prisons is to teach prisoners a work ethic and motivate them to work in an industrial environment"

It's making profitable industry out of prisons. It will be profitable to keep people in prison once this shit kicks in. I find this shit terrifying. I mean, I'll be fine, I'm an educated middle class white Irish woman. Lads, yous are fucked, poor people, yous are especially fucked, but immigint poor people with funny skin, yous are the specalliest fucked.

Prisoner activities

The philosophy of our prisons is to teach prisoners a work ethic and motivate them to work in an industrial environment. They are encouraged to be self-reliant and part of a team, and are trained to meet the necessary standards, output and quality demanded by the contracts including health and safety and quality control monitoring.
Prisoners participate in a full working week undertaking a wide range of industrial activities receiving training appropriate to their duties. Examples of activities operated and managed at our prisons are:

• a large commercial laundry processing 15,000 items per week to industry standards
• processing and preparation of audio visual media for recycling (in excess of 20 million items per year)
• assembly of office furniture and manufacture of metalwork parts
• manufacture of bespoke PVCu windows and conservatories in partnership with local industry
• welding, assembly and packaging of ironmongery
• general and specialist packaging
• electronic component and emergency light assembly

Are you sure that private firms will be running the actual “correctional/rehabilitative” aspect of the prisons in Ireland?
My understanding is that the IPS would be doing that, but absolutely everything else would be farmed out to private companies. Not necessarily the cheapest private companies either, there are service level agreements to conform to and stuff like that.
I have a small little bit of experience with this. Never heard of these GSL dudes though.

menial work is all very well and good for the poor and the immigrants but what happens if a middle-class person gets put away by accident? those months waiting to get out on appeal would be much longer if you had to wash laundry or make number plates every day.

Yeah pay is minimal. A bloke who was in prison and was in the Independent Workers Union took a case to the Labour Court on the basis that it was breaking minimum wage legislation, but that was about 3 years ago and nothing ever came of it so I guess he lost. Which is shit.
