Is it necessary to explain oneself when apologising for a delay in replying? I feel I should but I've no excuse apart from laziness.
Only if the response is time sensitive.

You could say that normally you just rattle off replies, but this person is different and you wanted to gather your thoughts and give a proper response.

It wasn't particularly time sensitive thankfully.
He replied in double quick time and doesn't seem too perturbed by my lackadaisical approach, he's obviously adapted to Irish ways.
