Irishness (3 Viewers)

What is is that makes you feel Irish? Is it being Catholic? Or alcoholic to a socially acceptable level? Is it a love of potatoes? Is it speaking the gaelic language? Is it listening to Planxty?
'what we were bringing about was a new establishment of Church and State in which imagination would play no part, and young men and women would emigrate to the ends of the earth, not because the country was poor, but because it was mediocre'

Hmmm, nice. But that was then. Are we still mediocre? OR are we arriving at the threshold of becoming a 'Knowledge Economy', whatever that is?

Does an 'Orts' degree count as knowledge? Less Saints, more Scholars etc....

I was having a chat with a senior businessman from Wales a while back about education/social mobility/poverty/social capital etc and he is passionate about education. He highlighted the massive problems in Wales in terms of education and social exclusion etc.

He also went on at length about Ireland from an outsiders perspective and how important the educational foundations were to the economy (knowledge or otherwise) EVEN if people in Ireland felt it was forced through a dictatorial church/regime.

The real problem is what Ireland and the Irish do with that foundation and how they could run the risk of squandering the social capital (potential) created over the last number of decades.

A knowledge economy is all well and good but it isn't worth shit if the knowledge isn't used to sustain a decent/fair/just/inclusive society where the knowledge and innovation systems are supportive of sustainable development in the broadest sense.

i made an instructional video about this recently
