DENVER (Reuters) - Hunter S. Thompson, the renowned American journalist and novelist who wrote "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," has fatally shot himself at his Colorado home, police say. He was 67.

"We do have confirmation that Hunter Thompson was found dead this evening of an apparent self-inflicted wound," said Tricia Louthis, spokeswoman for the Pitkin County Sheriff'sOffice. Thompson was found dead at his home outside the ski resort of Aspen on Sunday night.

thats bad news alright. gas that despite his lifestyle he still had to forcibly remove himself. america needs a commentator of his wit and honesty - someone who genuinely doesnt give a fuck and calls it exactly as he sees it in all situations. not sure theres anyone out there remotely qualified to take his place. .|..|

if hubert selby were still alive he'd be a good contender...

Always thought of his as the bullet in the brain type - didnt seem like he's die of old age. all the same, what an asshole for killing himself.

great lunacy writer though.

Hunter S Thompson's final wish will be granted when his ashes are blasted from a giant cannon in August.

The gun-loving writer will go out with a bang from a cannon mounted inside a 16-metre-high (53ft) sculpture of his trademark "gonzo" fist - a clenched hand on an upthrust forearm with the word gonzo written on it.

"It's expensive, but worth every penny," his wife, Anita Thompson, said. "I'd like to have several explosions. He loved explosions."

WHat a guy!
