holy flip! new bonnie "prince" billy (1 Viewer)

He just throws albums out without letting anybody know about them these days.

Anyone else get a new 7” Flexi disc from Domino in the post today? Apparently they’re just being sent out at random, very surprising!

Yeah was a nice suprise in the postbox yesterday. New Superwolf album coming soon I suppose.

BPB and Bill Callahan have about 5/6 download singles coming out soon, each seems to have a special guest collaborator such as matt sweeney, sean o'hagen, etc i.e.

Bonnie Billy and Bill Callahan dive into the current pop charts – a Billie Eilish cover, reanimated via Sean O’Hagan’s writhing modern-urban track. BE’s comedic slant became a contentious message when this was released; songwriters Will and Bill dig into her droll lyric construction and live their own gender truths, bringing fresh twists to it.

Bill Callahan & Bonnie Prince Billy - "Blackness of the Night (Feat. AZITA)" (Cat Stevens)

Determined to make a new friend out of an old favorite, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and Bill Callahan dropped a tape letter through AZITA’s mail slot, asking only for one in return. The contents they sent: one of Cat Stevens’ earliest protest songs. What they got back: a version of the song to sing together! Though unfamiliar with the tune, AZITA arranged and played it entirely, attaining celestial translucence by downshifting into a slower tempo. The harmonies of Bonnie and Bill step into the spiritual spotlight, as fresh dollops of synth and other keys bloom in the darkness. Cat’s version pays a debt to the churchy sound of Procol Harum; AZITA spends the sum in other ways, transposing the instrumental break into a heavenly guitar break before giving way to the two Bills, who take it out with a last pass of harmonized hope against hopelessness.

Bill Callahan & Bonnie 'Prince’ Billy - "OD'd in Denver (feat. Matt Sweeney)" (Hank Williams Jr.)

Knock knock, who's there? Bonnie Billy and Bill Callahan featuring Matt Sweeney with a new track, "OD'd in Denver," an old Hank Williams Jr. favorite. The boys trade Hank Jr.’s good-timin’ lope for a minor-key cask of sinister, coked-out jitters.
Matt Sweeney on this process: "One of the many beautiful things about the original 'OD’d In Denver' is the contrast between Hank Williams Junior’s effortless carefree vocal and the song’s bleak desperate words. So I thought I’d 'chop it up' and make the song’s music 'line up' with its lyrics by having minor key guitars percolate and arpeggiate, and singing an equally paranoid 'guide melody'. Then Greg Sweeney laced in his drum and percussion elements at his studio in Hoboken. Hank’s version’s narrator thinks he’s gotten over his night in Denver — I wanted this WillBilly track to feel like we’re catching our singer deep in the fear spiral."
This bed of music propels Callahan’s remorseless baritone to go deep on, tangled in the sheets with Billy’s haunted falsetto getting high — a spiraling stream of light and dark which communicates that disassociative ol’ post-OD emptiness to a T. Or a C.

Bill Callahan & Bonnie 'Prince’ Billy - "I've Made Up My Mind (feat. Alasdair Roberts)" (Dave Rich)

Others find pleasure in things you despise? Have a taste of country-gone-Northern soul. Spirit-soul, that is, as Scotland’s Alasdair Roberts leads the band for Bill Callahan and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy to sing o'er, recasting a bit of Dave Rich’s indelible Nashville gospel into something more copacetic with his syncretic socio-musical imaginings. As fragrant wah-wah leads weave and genuine Nashville-strung guitars strum in front of a gentle fiddle march in ¾, Bonnie sings lead, with Bill's bass harmony vocals winding in and out of the droning waltz. Brother Callahan steps forward to testify at several key moments, and hands reach across the water all over the place, with the redolence of Gram and Emmylou, Richard and Linda, Shirley and Dolly, Bob and The Band, The Albion Country Band and all of their forebears, kith and kin stretching from here back to the horizon.

Bill Callahan & Bonnie 'Prince’ Billy - "Red Tailed Hawk (feat. Matt Kinsey)" (The Other Years)

Video Link; Bill Callahan & Bonnie Prince Billy Videos | Drag City

Bill Callahan guitar-slinger of choice Matt Kinsey meets the songcraft of Heather Summers (of Louisville’s The Other Years) for the first time ever, swapping the eternal life of their Irish Folk modalities for his deathless neo-country arrangement! His dreamy guitar treatments weave sonic filigree around the harmonies of Bill and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, blowing drafts of wind through the haiku-like lyrics and the natural space of the song.
