Talk about games consoles. Good/bad etc.
One kid wants an xbox and one kid wants a wii.
They currently have a PS2.
Am I mad to be considering a PS3 because they can still play their ps2 games and we can also check out our tempramental dvd player and use the ps3 for dvds with added blue ray access?
Is PS3 old hat? Bare in mind that they get to play the thing for 3 hours a week.

Depending on how old the kids are and what they like, the xbox/ps3 and the wii are two very different consoles.
The Wii would be better for younger kids, as alot of the games are fairly family friendly and PG.
As far as PS3 vs Xbox, they're fairly similar, both getting most of the same games, but if your kid wants some specific games that are xbox exclusive, then getting a PS3 might upset them. also depending on their age, xbox vs 360 has alot to do with online play and playing with friends. so their friends might all have xbox, and thus he wants an xbox (which makes sense really and is better for him as regards playing online). Though the PS3 does have the added capability of playing Blu-rays.
and yeah,
only the initial PS3s had backwards compatibility with PS2 games. Newly produced ones don't.

3 hours a week?

Seems a bit low.3 hours a day surely is necessary if they are to master the things, no?

Thanks PornOnVinyl you pretty much just stated all reasons I don't want to get them an xbox. From my uninformed position it seems like the console for the 20+ year old. Thanks for the tip off about backwards compatibility of the PS3, which is total bullshit from Sony.
More info please.

Have the kids ever thought about something portable? iPod Touch is the no.1 best selling handheld and nicely doubles up as mp3 player/camera. Might wanna restrict the internet though. Games a lot cheaper in the long run too.

I always perceived the xbox for the HC gamer types, the wii for party/family games & the Playstation for the casual user.

Dunno if that helps, but for kids I would've thought of the wii as a no brainer...

FTW. Your kids will thank the shit out of me.

Wii is family based, but is being replaced next year.

Xbox would attract the hardcore crowd, but is getting much more family friendly with kinnect (camera jobbie that means 'they' (the children) are the controller. Has decent family settings so you can lock out stuff you don't want the nippers to access.

PS3 would be a good option if you want blu ray capabilities, which is pretty much all I use mine for. I think it has family settings somewhere too.

Blu Ray players will be on sale for 40 pound in the uk next week...Sainsbuys I think...

I have a PS3 that I play 3 times a year. I got it as a present, I'm not very good at games.
So my 7yr old son tends to play it most weeks. It's pretty simple to use, good parental controls. 4 digit password to block internet access, restrict what age rating games can be played etc.
We got the kids a Wii a few christmas's ago, which the youngest likes. I asked my son which did he think was best, he says the PS3, as even a 7yr will tell you the graphics are shite on the Wii.
Some good fun games though with the Wii.

Depends what age I guess, but I wouldn't have bought him a PS3 though.
An orange and a bag of coal, that's what I'll give him this year.

Tempted to get that on the awl Steam. Any use? There's a new one I think called Arkham City... whats all that about? A city?
