Following high-profile 2008 collaborations with Greg Osby, Jean Toussaint, Tommy Smith and Soweto Kinch, 24-year-old Irish jazz drummer/composer David Lyttle embarks on an extensive tour, this time in trio, with Belfast guitar protegy Mark McKnight and New York bassist Derek Nievergelt.
Known for his passionate and driving approach to jazz that swings hard, David Lyttle has performed professionally with a wide variety of internationally-acclaimed artists, including David Liebman, Greg Osby, Jean Toussaint, Soweto Kinch, Tommy Smith, Jaleel Shaw, Jacqui Dankworth and Louis Stewart, with recent dates in New York, Toronto, Britain and Eastern Europe. His earliest musical experiences were as a child in his family band, performing on cello, bodhrán and lambeg drum. Self-taught on drum kit since the age of eight, David also received classical training on cello but began to focus his efforts towards drums in his late teens after taking a serious interest in jazz. A graduate of the University of Ulster, he has also studied under scholarship at the Banff Centre (Canada) and Skidmore Jazz Institute (New York). During 2005 and 2006, with support from the Arts Council, David received private tuition in New York with Jeff 'Tain' Watts, Ralph Peterson, Ari Hoenig, Carl Allen and John Riley.
Mark McKnight is widely regarded as one of the most important and exciting Irish guitarists to have emerged in recent years. He is also a regular performer on the Scottish jazz scene and his debut CD is due to be recorded in New York later this year. Recently Mark was a finalist at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival Guitar Competition.
Derek Nievergelt is one of New York's most prominent bassists and has worked with Herbie Hancock, Bobby Watson, Greg Osby and Terence Blanchard, with whom he recorded the Grammy-nominated album 'Let's Get Lost', featuring Dianna Krall, Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves and Jane Monheit.
