personally, i wouldn't say Amelie sucks (oooh, matron!), it's just that she wanders through the film with this sweet little innocent expression that you just want to shake her by the shoulders, bitch-slap her into submission, screaming "life is shit, you dizzy bitch" into her ear until she bursts into a flood of tears.

I love Amelie, the film AND the character, so next time I see you I'm gonna bitch-slap you, you nasty fucker!

BELLE DE JOUR....classic

BATTLE OF ALGIERS...classic....Both are sub titled too.

Or get Baudelaire or Rimbaud books - they have the french sections and English....all old french i`d reakon - so you can be a posh bastard and impress the aristocracy and stuff.Build contacts, get rich etc.. you know the way.

For French lyrics, you can't beat Boris Vian. Friend of Sartre, famous surrealist novelist, car mechanic, jazz trumpeter, pornographer. Yes, he's got it all.

Refrain 1

J'suis snob... J'suis snob

Refrain 2

J'suis snob... J'suis snob

[oooh, first post]

(summary of lmd64's anti-Amelie argument - "But do you not think she's too sweet and nice?" ... if kindness without hope of reciprocation unsettles you then I suggest your conscience needs examination)

ooooh, !baggyyyy

no, no, no, what i meant was Lola from Lola Rennt would jump-kick her ass into next tuesday

anyway, if i feel like that, then what i must say is, it is not i whom is at fault, nay, but perchance at the feet of society the blame must lie

or something

Frog Films

Some more good French films to watch:
I thought 'La Reine Margot' was good, very dramatic but in a good way. I saw 'Jules et Jim' years ago and it was alright. There's a really nice one called 'Popette' about this wee girl who's just lost her Mum. I also saw 'The Double Life of Veronique' recently and it was really very good and looked beautiful.

did anyone mention 37'2 le matain (bettey blue)? or the hairdresser's husband? i like them filims. they're mad french an' all, i still say foreigners ou' an' all but theys alright for a sneaky birra prawn...

thought the message from Amelie was "there's no such thing as altruism, basically everyone's out for themselves and even a kind act falls back on itself, and heck, anyway, all people really want is to get their oats, check out this chick, it's all she wants, that and to ride on the back of a motorbike with some leather-smelling frenchman who works in a porn shop"

...or was that just me reading something into it that wasn't really there?

so basically what you're saying is that Amelie's sweetness and lightness is just a front, and that she's really just out to pick up as many brownie points as possible, until she maxes out and picks up her karmic bonus paycheck in the form of the rather scrawny-looking french guy?
