NEIL COWLEY TRIO: REVOLUTION 9 EP - Available exclusively from iTunes!
A track so bizarre, Revolution 9 is probably the ultimate in ‘uncoverable’. Originally appearing on the Beatles classic 1968 White Album, the eight minutes of weirdness, tape loops, sound effects, feedback, and creepy vocal clips presented the fab four at their most experimental and most controversial.
On the anniversary of the White Album, Mojo Magazine invited artists to re-record tracks from the original. With his masterful trio and long-time collaborators, Richard Sadler on bass and Evan Jenkins on drums, pianist and composer Neil Cowley jumped at the chance to record not only the classic ‘Revolution 1’, but this fascinating track too. “It was the challenge of covering the uncoverable” he said. “A chance to allow the trio total freedom, be ourselves and dance around a studio listening to an ex BBC bloke chanting “number nine” into a mic!” As Mojo said of the track, “The Neil Cowley Trio accentuates its classical stylings before plunging headlong into free-form chaos”!
Yet Revolution 9 sees a freer interplay between the trio, a side not yet heard on either their debut or their current highly acclaimed release Loud.. Louder...Stop. In addition, the EP contains three other previously unreleased tracks that between them present the many sides of the trio. Rank Outsider is their anthemic, grandiose “pomp-jazz” offering, while Kalabis is a sombre downtempo solo piano piece that contrasts with the quirky, playful spirited romp, Sheriff Cul-De Sac.
