Cardboard Circus Album Launch

It was a big year for The Hardcore Priests of Yemen. Winning the Townhouse Battle of the Bands in December 2013 allowed them to record their first full studio album, The Cardboard Circus, recorded at The Forge Studios in Galway with Ray Diamond. They’ve been gaining momentum outside Galway ever since, and a busy festival season this summer saw them playing concerts at Body and Soul Festival, The Dunes Festival Sligo, and the PJ Conlon Festival.

They’ve just recently signed with newly established label/music collective Citóg.The next logical step is a national tour, and the band is excited to get started. “We want to blend our love of theatrics and music into a live show where funk grooves and thoughtful melodies meet. We’ve been an underground collective that have been plying our own type of scene for many years in small clubs and venues around Galway and now we want to show off this medley of music and oddball antics further afield!” said Féilim O'hAoláin, guitarist and lead vocalist.

The “Priests”, as they are affectionately known by their fans, are busy booking gigs up and down the island, and hope to confirm dates in Limerick, Cork, and Dublin in the months leading up to the summer, just for a start. The band are also planning to return to Glasgow City where they recorded their first e.p. in Green Door studios and where they also have a cult following.

HARDCORE PRIESTS OF YEMEN

The Hardcore Priests of Yemen are a seven piece ska tradfunk outfit based in Galway City. They’ve been experimenting since their inception as a garage band, back in 2002. The band built up a strong fan base from their early Aras na Gael gigs "Craic agus Ráiméis", and over the last four years of constant writing and performing, they’ve zeroed in on a solid new sound. Ska rhythms, melody-driven grooves, and quirky, heartfelt lyrics combine with an irrepressible sense of humour to create an eccentric and compelling listening experience.

As they continue to develop new directions, the band hopes to begin using Irish in a contemporary style in the language of their music. The live concerts are energetic and offbeat with many unexpected twists and turns. Their love all things theatrical and absurd is a driving force, with crazy costumes, props and multi-
media installations expanding the medium in creative new ways. Their most recent theatrical outgoing was their version of “The Rocky Horror Show” for Kellys live venue on Halloween night, which was much applauded as an accidental burlesque success. They recorded their first EP Cabinets of Curiosity in the Green Door analog recording studios in Glasgow three years ago. The new full length studio album, The Cardboard Circus, is available at Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop, the Townhouse Bar, and Wingnut Records, and will be available to buy online very soon. In the meantime, you can check them out at Breaking Tunes - The Hardcore Priests of Yemen
