I work for a crew who have just put up a new website with a proper domain name etc. Trouble is that the old one which eircom hosted is still there and NOBODY knows the password for it to be able to go in and take it down. Eircom won't entertain any requests to take it down without a password. The old site is on one of those homepage.eircom.net/companyname dealies. Any of you bespectacled nerds know of a way around this?

Guess the password. Do you have the FTP server & username details at least? Lash them into a bruteforce password cracker and leave it running for a few months.

i'm not entirely sure but aren't those eircom webspaces linked in with whatever mail a/c you sign-up to? you could try answering the two security questions required for the mailbox re-set. http://support.eircom.net/password

surely an email from $new_company_domain to eircom requesting a take-down would suffice? it's not as if taking down a shitty eircom geocity clone of webspace would cause much of a ruckas.

it seems our email is now with hosting365 along with the site.

i'm even more confused now than before, thanks guys!

Clarification

There are currently two 'live' sites: the old one on eircom and the new one on hosting365 with the proper domain.

Don't see how I can reroute anything if I can't access the eircom files. I asked the others about the ftp password etc and they said "ft what?"

can't ye hack into it and put up some animal porn or something?

say your website was this: hello.com and it went to the eircom files. If you now have hello.com pointing to the hosting 365 files what's the problem? If you can't delete you can't delete them..

Don't think there is any way around it. You'll need to access the site or have Eircom take it down for you. Can't Eircom ask you some questions to prove your identity and then give you your password? Surely people lose their password all the time.

But they can't change the old one if they don't have the password, right?

Yeah. The DNS record will map the domain name to the IP address of the hosting 365 server. But still, the old website is there and can be accessed.

if the eircom site has shit a shit ranking in google, you might get away with never deleting it.

That's the problem, it does come up pretty high in google, that's why we want it gone.

Gambra, I don't know what to say, you just don't get it maaaaannn.

Basically, the consensus seems to be to ring eircom and cry down the phone?

i have no fuckin idea what you dorks are on about.

i'll probably just forget the whole thing until someone complains about it again. It's not even my job but my computery background gets me in trouble with this shit from time to time.

Yeah that's what I mean. That's all that needs to be changed..

But the old site is a different domain and site both owned by eircom and eircom are refusing to do anything without a password. Your saying to change the dns entry for the old eircom address to the new site I think. But surely that can't be done without eircom's permission.

couldn't have put it better myself. you're a fuckin ledgebag moose.

eircom web spaces aren't even sub-domains. asking eircom for a dns entry change would re-direct their entire domain.

best thing to do is keep hassling eircom (faxing in some letterheaded stationary would be a normal protocol) and get them to replace the index with a redirect to new domain.

shit lads, stop making Gambra feel so stupid please. I feel kinda bad for him now.

forget moving dns and all that, its a waste of time as eircome hosting cheep as hell.

why not just get a password reset for the user id?
your user id will be what ever the hostname is less eircom.homepage ... ie:
eircom.hompeage.com/ your company name <-- username

if it eircom its linked to your phone bill.

it's ok guys,
got it sorted. Called Eircom and said I needed the password for 'username', and, without any reservation, the dude just gave it to me. They're security policy must be second to none.
