Ireland's newest music festival ELECTRIC PICNIC - a 25,000 capacity sell-out last year - has been voted 'Love of the Year 2005' by in the end-of-year readers' poll of Hot Press, Ireland's top-selling music magazine for the last 27 years.
Other music events in the top 10 include U2's three shows at Croke Park (No 2), Oxegen festival (No 6) and Live 8 ( No 9).
This affirms that punters agree with the critics' verdict of 'event of the year' in Ireland - see some of the unanimously gushing press quotes below...
'One of the best festivals we have ever been to... the bands and the sound were incredible... and the organization was perfect, short queues, good cleaning and a wide array of services' Rolling Stone
"I have been to pretty much every festival in the UK and a bunch across Europe and I was amazed that something in my own backyard could top the lot. Great organization, great alternative entertainment, facilities, food, no queues, good security and an amazing bill . It all made for a very special atmosphere. " BBC Northern Ireland
'Wonderful weekend. Electric Picnic has raised the bar for the music festival in Ireland… Crucially, the experience for the 25,000 people who attended each day was second to none….attention was paid to the smallest details. Now this is what you call a boutique festival! ’ Irish Independent 5/5
‘The organizers of the Electric Picnic put on the best Irish music festival in years, easily surpassing previous similar efforts such as Witnness and Oxegen’ Village 5/5 (current affairs magazine)
‘A 25,000 sell-out, in its second year the Electric Picnic matured into one of the best festivals in Europe... best festival i have ever been to' Hot Press
‘The diversions of the comedy tent, the Glastonbury cabaret of Lost Vagueness or screenings of DIG! in the Cinema mean it is entirely possible to enjoy Electric Picnic without having to sully oneself with music………On a good humoured Sunday night it feels like the electric dreams of this little enclosed community could last forever. And then, finally, the music ends and the bubble bursts.’ The Irish Times (Sunday review)
‘The Electric Picnic was an inspirational 48 hours of great, great fun for everybody. It was like a giant circus with so much going on around you and so much to see and do. People sleeping in teepees and practitioners giving Indian head massages, all added to the alternative frisson of this slightly surreal two day cultural extravaganza. If this was the last of the summer wine, then it couldn’t have tasted any sweeter.’ Sunday Independent
