Of course if you believe the contemporary reports from the first crop of bands signed to Earache the label was ruined pretty much as soon as it started. Yeah, sure the dogma-laden late 80's scene would knock anything that moved and try to tear down anything that rose above the herd, but it seems like the business practices of Earache were pretty cavalier right from the start.

I remember them getting a lot of shit back then. But,at least they were releasing good records.
I'd say a lot of the bands lack of experience and naivity didn't help the situation then.

Certainly, and I'm far from taking the early criticism at face value, but one has to ask why it was Earache that got all the flak, rather than Peaceville (for example) which had an equally high profile and in retrospect a pretty good crop of releases.
 
In fairness,Peaceville got a lot of flak too. Doom for example were very public about it. Maybe it was because they didn't stay so prolific?
Haven't Peaceville been reissuing a lot of stuff on cd recently?
