i'm reading john pilger's "hidden agendas" and he mentions several films he made, one on east timor and one on the aboriginals and a few others that looked really interesting, and i'm just wondering does anyone know
if they are avilable anywhere to rent /buy/borrow/see ??

there's also a film made about chomsky that i'd like to see.

wouldnt it be great if your local extravision carried all these things as well as or even instead of the usual brainless shite that they are full of.....

Great book...
For Pilger try here:
http://pilger.carlton.com/
They've got some of his films in Real Player form.
Also here:
www.zmag.org
for his latest articles
As for old man Chomsky i ordered Manufacturing consent and Distorted morality from Amazon US recently on DVD (the MC dvd has some great extra footage of the debate with Foucault) and they weren't that expensive and delivery was pretty quick. The last film, Power and Terror is available here:

And there's always AK Press,

The last Pilger book, New Rulers of the World is top class too...

You could always write to Carlton - as far as I know they have copies of Pilger's stuff (vids) to sell...

they have (or had anyway) a copy of Manufacturing Consent in Laser on georges street

pilger is excellent. distant voices and hidden agendas are two of the most insightful books i have read. i recommend a copy of his new book "the new rulers of the world" if you want to look like a conspiray theory nut when reading it on the train or bus...its got a very er... "colourful" front cover to compliment the title. but its an interesting read and fairly up to date with world events.

thanks faq and steve for the suggestions, will try to get the one in laser first and then maybe buy the dvd's.

i read the new rulers of the world recently. amazing and very scary and disturbing. one result of reading chomsky and pilger is that i am know very suspicious of a lot of the political commentary books/collections of journalism that i see in book shops.

i would rather get recomendations from like minded people than trust media reviews - thats how i heard of the new rulers of the world - so are there any other writers i should look for ?

also something else i have been wondering : are there any well written books on irish politics and policy that dont peddle the usual propaganda ?

thanks ;)

Edward W Said has written some great books,
David Barsimian
The Media Monopoly, Ben H Bagdikian
The Project Censored series, Peter Phillips and Carl Jenkins
How the other half dies, Susan George
Le Monde Diplomatique exists in english now, Ed Hermann (who co-wrote Manufacturing Consent with Chomsky) recently qualified it as the best paper in the world

"Untold Stories: Protestants in the Republic of Ireland 1922-2002" is worth a read. Not cheap at €20 though.

i've heard that "the myth of social partnership in ireland" is meant to be good. it's by a socialist worker fella, though. just so as you know.

funny: the film "manufacturing consent" was double-booked in xtravision. both the socialists (swp) and anarchists (wsm) wanted to show it on the same day. well it seemed sort of funny at the time. then an swp guy ran down the stairs after me to get me to join the party and all that jazz. grr.

thanks for all the info,
those books should keep me going for ages ;)

i made a list of stuff that looked good from the most recent books thread on the main board, i'm slowly working my way through it, only disappointment so far was austerlitz which i really disliked. very underwhelming :(

Film / Video Club ?

"Wouldnt it be great if your local extravision carried all these things?"

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in forming a video or film club where we get together to buy hard-to-get documentaries and films.
- A DIY solution to the lack of easy availability of such films. We could either share the videos around or to be more sociable, watch the films as a group once a month or so. This second option would take a bit more organisation and we'd need to buy (or know someone with) a projector.

We could also augment the collection by taping good programs from the TV. For instance, I recently taped a program called "Between Iraq and a Hard Place" by Bremner, Bird & Fortune. It's well worth watching. I thought Michael Moore was good for making documentaries entertaining but these boys managed to split my sides and at the same time tell me more than I'd previously known about Iraq's history and the links between the Bush administration and the corporations in line to profit from Iraq's "liberation".

Silo: A funny story indeed.
Being a lazy reader, I haven't read Kieran Allen's "The myth of social partnership in Iireland" but I read the SWP pamphlet which summarises it and I was impressed with the clarity of the writing and the depth of research.

'This Great Little Nation: The A-Z of Irish Scandals' is worth a read.
